God’s Plans and Purposes [Heart] [Knowing God - part 5]

2008 June 8

And so we continue on some more in Psalm 33, pressing our way forward to more and more of God:

But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever,
the purposes of his heart through all generations.

12. The plans of the LORD stand firm forever.

1. And yet the great plans of our God will last always, which should really come as no surprise based on a few facts: a] the word of the Lord is true and right; b] the Lord is faithful in all he does; c] the Lord spoke and the earth was formed, he commanded and it stood firm.  With prior knowledge of God, understanding his greater ways and things becomes easier to accept and believe.  It’s not about blind obedience – but if some one only speaks the truth then what would he say that you wouldn’t believe?  If you didn’t believe him you would be a fool.  It’s like having the man who was never unlucky tell you which horse to pick: you’d win every time – and it would only take a few races and thousands of dollars to convince you to buy in fully.

Staying with this theme: the principle of the man who finds the buried treasure in a field that is not his comes to mind.  He sold everything he had in order to buy that field so that he would possess the treasure.  The thing that Jesus is saying is that the word of the Lord as truth is the stuff of gold. Greater than gold and if we’re smart, we’d do everything, anything, to get our hands and minds on it, going over it, comprehending it, allowing it to seep into the depths of our brains.  And become reality in our lives.

I suppose that you could argue that the man isn’t really speaking the truth – that in all actuality everything he says is a lie.  If you go that route, then you clearly don’t trust the Lord and you have to start over at a completely different spot: this discussion is about believing God and walking that out completely – not the initial understanding of Christ as Savior.

13. The purposes of his heart last through all generations.

1. This one speaks tenderly to me.  As I reflect on it, God’s plans and purposes are very nearly the same thing…the purpose of his heart is for us to be one with him.  His great example of that unity is in the trinity – the three are so much one that often it is hard to identify which one to pull from or call out if your knowledge isn’t deep enough.  But he longs for us to be in that one place with him – which is why he never gives up, which is why his heart lasts for all generations.  Each generation, however rebellious and disobedient, is dear to his heart.  It is why he always waited for another one to rise up, desperate for his heart – because his heart was for them, for each and every one.

This is a big one to believe [though it should be easy, we should buy into everything he says because it is all truth], because it is intimately connected to us, to our growth and satisfaction.  This is where we find hope, peace and grace.
